The backyard of the Phakathi family is a fruitful place – there are banana plants, a guava tree, and sugar cane. Three boys braved the rain, prepared a vegetable bed and with the help of Emseni Farming, cabbages, green peppers and chillies were added to the family supply.
It was a joyous occasion on Saturday 26/04/2025 when Emseni Farming visited the KwaSizabantu Mission branch, Claridge, Pietermaritzburg. As much as it is important to plant, it is imperative that the plants are looked after and nourished. This involves going into the garden, weeding, watering the plants and applying fertliser. Here, these families are putting sawdust on the ground around the cabbage plants to keep the water from washing away the soil.

On 22 March 2025, Mr Mzi Ndlovu, together with his son, Nqubeko visited the Msinga area to teach a group of 40 community members how to plant vegetable seeds and seedlings. They were glad that they could gain the knowledge of planting using only a small portion of ground or even planting in aQuellé bottles….
In an open, unused field, the Ngubane family went to work tilling the ground for a place to grow their own vegetables. They prepared the soil with compost, dug the holes, planted the cabbages and beetroot. Now the plants can grow! The Ngcamu family followed suit by preparing their field and planting the seedlings donated…
The garden at Cedar International Academy is flourishing. The first healthy, fresh and beautiful spinach is harvested on the 01 April 2025. At 4 primary schools – Ocheni, Zamazisa, Bonginkosi and Balcomb’s Hill Primary – the school children learnt to plant cabbages, spinach and beetroot today.
