As responsible custodians of the beautiful areas where we farm our produce, we have recognised the importance of preserving nature's delicate balance. Therefore, we demonstrate sustainability and governance in all our actions.
Bees
The honeybee amongst others, is our # 1 pollinator for the avocado crop, wildflower or tree species.
As rural communities and farming operations have developed over the decades, the wild bee populators have become more endangered and diminished in their native ranges due to habitat loss and indiscriminate insecticide use.
As a result, we have had to introduce bees back into our farming operations and encouraged wildflowers and beneficial plant growth in our orchards to support healthy bee populations again.
We have severely limited the use of insecticides and actively use beneficial insects which by nature predate on harmful pest complexes.
This practice has restored the critical balance between pests and natural enemies.
Improving our Biodiversity
At Emseni Farming we have introduced management practices to retain and support a well-balanced ecosystem. This approach recognises the importance of plants, animals, and microorganisms’ variability, that are all necessary to retain nature's key functions.
Our commitment to create protected areas is critical for the conservation of several species, including the honeybee.
Our focused activities include planting natural occurring & bee friendly indigenous plants, ongoing removal of alien vegetation and management of wildlife corridors which are natural habitats for a wide range of wildlife species.
Composting & Mulching
Our farming operations have over time reduced the reliance on solely utilising inorganic fertilizers in our nutritional programs and have resorted to incorporating composting to preserve and promote healthy soil-based ecosystems.
Reducing Water Usage
Throughout our greenhouse & orchard operations we have introduced precision irrigation. The various technologies provide the plants with the exact amount of water required to grow and yield optimally.
Given our perfect climatic conditions and rainfall, a substantial portion of our avocados are grown on dry land or irrigated using low flow drip technology.
Rainwater Harvesting
Given our extensive hectarage of peppers grown in greenhouse tunnels, a substantial amount of rainwater is successfully harvested and channelled into holding reservoirs. This is then used to irrigate surrounding crops.
Environmentally Friendly Packaging
Our avocado and pepper cartons are made from 100% recyclable material.
